Mt. Rainier

  • Currently serving 18 elementary-aged (5-11) children, afterschool programs at this site encompass our regular peace education programming, particularly emphasizing recreational and service activities as well as visits from special guests who share the peacemaking they do in their personal and professional lives.
  • Summer Peace Camp at Mt. Rainier is in such high demand that 2009 saw three different weeks of camp at this site. Two of those weeks served elementary children, while the third week was our first Peace Leaders Week, training older youth who are too young to become full-fledged LFFP counselors.

  • LFFP initiated and organized Peace Month in Mt. Rainier, MD. 2009 activities included a seed and seedling exchange, a family potluck and workshop on peacemaking, evening contemplative litter pickups, a square dance following a “Stop Mountaintop Removal” event, and a Stress for Less workshop, among other events. To kick off the Month of Peace, the Boy Scouts and LFFP Peace Club worked with Park and Planning to construct a path, plant flowers and herbs, and install a Peace Pole in the Peace Garden at 30th Street and Arundel Road.

Perry School

  • LFFP is a founding organization of the anti-poverty collaboration housed in the historic Perry School building. From our Peace Room, we daily teach peace education to 40 elementary aged and 20 teenaged youth enrolled in our building partner, Perry Center, Inc.’s Youth Development Program.
  • Every Thursday during the school year, the Peace Room at the Perry School transforms into a Peace Café. Timmy Park, Culinary Arts student at Anne Arundel Community College, collaboratively plans peace meals with Perry Peace Kids. He shops for the food, brings it to the Peace Room, and prepares the meal with the children, who then serve the meal to each other, parents, and Perry staff. The Peace Café is a self-esteem boost for the children as well as an experience of peacemaking as they work together, using hands positively in making a nutritious meal. Furthermore, Peace Café builds a sense of community as the children eat together and share their food with others.

Sursum Corda

  • Ongoing peace activity days are scheduled as requested and on a regular basis in the Sursum Corda neighborhood, adjacent to the Perry School Community Services Center. Neighborhood matron Ann Little works with LFFP to provide peace education to at-risk youth who do not attend the Perry Center, Inc. Youth Development/LFFP Peace Room  and would have no access to LFFP without these activity days.

Beacon House

  • LFFP infuses peace education into Beacon House’s educational, cultural, recreational, and athletic programming for at-risk youth through weekly peace education for youth enrolled in their program and regular staff in-services. Beacon House youth are also invited by UUCA (Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington) to attend their summer peace camp.
